- Fuel Pump
-
- The fuel pump
- performs two
- functions. First,
- it delivers enough
- fuel to supply the
- engine under any
- operating
- conditions.
- Second, it
- maintains enough
- pressure in the
- line between the
- carburetor and the
- pump to keep the
- fuel from boiling,
- preventing vapor
- lock. Fuel pumps
- can be powered
- electrically or
- mechanically.
-
- Excessive fuel pump
- pressure will not
- allow the float
- needle to close.
- As a result, the
- gasoline level in
- the float chamber
- rises and so does
- gasoline
- consumption. The
- fuel pump normally
- delivers a minimum
- of ten gallons of
- gasoline per hour
- at top engine
- speeds. Highest
- pressure (7 pounds)
- occurs at idling
- speed. Lowest
- pressure (2.5
- pounds) occurs at
- top speed.
